Key Note Speaker - Labor Introduction

Thomas P. DiNapoli is the 54^th Comptroller of the State of New York. Tom grew up in a union household. His father worked as a cable splicer and foreman and was a proud Communications Workers of America union member and shop steward. His mother was a clerk at the Nassau County Police Department and a member of the Civil Service Employees Association. From his parents, Tom saw the value of hard work, stretching every dollar and giving back to the community at an early age. Tom knows the importance of being in a union and the upward mobility it provides for workers and their families.

He has fought for labor and workers’ rights his entire career. As a State Assemblyman, he supported legislation in favor of raising the minimum wage, increasing workers’ compensation benefits and protecting the rights of unions to organize.

As State Comptroller, he has overseen record-growth of the New York State Common Retirement Fund, one of the best managed and best funded public pension plans in the nation. More than 1.2 million public employees, retirees and their families know they can depend on Tom to protect their retirement security and fight for their defined benefit plan.

Tom champions workers' rights, pushing companies in the pension fund's portfolio to prioritize employee well-being. He has held corporations accountable for protecting workers' health and safety, ensuring fair wages and benefits, and respecting their rights to organize and bargain collectively. He has criticized excessive executive pay and urged companies to address the gap between CEO and worker pay. Tom adopted pioneering responsible contracting and workforce management policies that now serve as national models to safeguard workers and shareholder value. Through his efforts, Tom is protecting the pension fund's long-term value while building an economy that works for all.

His record as State Comptroller reflects an unwavering commitment to protect the people’s money, keep government accountable and build toward a better future for New Yorkers.
