Message from Business Manager Robert Shand

ImageWe would like to welcome you to our official IBEW Local 1049 website. Our local union of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) was chartered in 1937. Today we represent approximately 3,500 members. We are one of the largest labor unions on Long Island and our jurisdiction covers all utility workers, line clearance tree trimmers, electric and gas construction workers, flag persons, environmental clean-up, pole restoration, transmission, grounds maintenance and right-of-way maintenance workers, KHES and valve replacement workers. Local 1049 is one of the more than 767 local unions that make up the IBEW.  The IBEW represents approximately 750,000 members who work in a wide variety of fields, including utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. The IBEW has members in both the United States and Canada, and stands out among the American unions in the AFL-CIO because it is among the largest and most active and has members in so many skilled occupations. We work hard to help out communities in need, and we care about our jobs and our customers.

The IBEW is comprised of eleven districts throughout the United States and Canada. Local 1049 is part of the Third District which encompasses Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Within the Third District there are approximately 130,000 Members, making our district one of the largest in the IBEW. We have organized and hold Collective Bargaining Agreements with 13 different employers. We have contracts in the Electric Construction Division, Gas Construction Division, Grounds Maintenance and Restricted Right of Way, Environmental Clean-Up, Heating and Air Conditioning, Pole Treatement, the Tree Division, Turbine Maintenance, Utility with National Grid, and Valve Replacement.

We work hard to keep our union as a viable entity, not just as skilled craftsman, but as unionists, to be dynamic and compliant in our industry. Those who remain stagnant or disengaged will fail, but we will not.  Successfully managing our union will help us become a larger more effective union and establish our rightful position as skilled workers and Long Islanders.  At 1049 we have developed a blueprint for success and we are currently engaged as a IBEW "Code of Excellence" participant. We have developed the following concepts to help us acheive success; organizing, professionalism, skilled craftsman and enhanced relations with our business partners. This strategy will help us succeed through Information-Communication-Education. Not a monologue, but a dialog amongst ourselves as a local union and with leaders, politicians, businesses and our community. Membership Engagement where we engage the current membership and look to empower a new generation of workers. We do this by cultivating allies across the community, and work to help elect representatives who support working families. It is our heritage and our culture to concentrate on Safety, Skill and Professionalism.  These fundamentals set us apart as the skilled union tradesman we are.  This blueprint for success is a model for working men and women to come together and reclaim their rightful place in America.  We have the vehicle to make working people's struggle a reality, and the tools neccessary to help workers take control of their work lives.

We hope that the membership of Local 1049 finds this website useful and informative. We built this site with the members in mind, helping you to find information quickly and efficently. We also would like to welcome members of the public and the media, to learn about our union. We care greatly about the communities in which we live, and are always willing to help out our neighbors in need. If you are a non-union employee and you are looking for information on how to organize your workplace for better rights and working conditions, please feel free to visit our ORGANIZE 1049 page and submit your information there.

We are hard working and highly skilled union members who care about the community and we work hard to keep Long Island lighted and heated through snow storms and floods, holidays and hurricanes.  Be proud to be union and make your voice heard. We are Local 1049, the people who keep the gas and lights on.
