Today the Main Committees met for a full day of bargaining at the offices of IBEW Local 1049 in Hauppauge. Opening the session, Business Manager Shand stated that he wanted to continue with the pace of the last session and was prepared to present the company with the several redrafts of the Union’s proposals. The company’s Chief Negotiator Greenbaum stated he was prepared to do the same.

The parties exchanged and discussed the revised proposals and agreed to many of them leaving the proposals regarding economics such as; term, wages and medical to be discussed at the very end. In the afternoon session, a review of the subcommittees on CMS, Customer Service, EDO and Generation were discussed at length. Several of subcommittees have concluded, however, there are some remaining items that need additional discussion. When it appeared that the unresolved subcommittee’s issues could not be settled today by the Main Committee, the parties agreed to reconvene the subcommittees on Thursday and then report back to the Main Committee.

Overall today’s session was productive and the next meeting date will be scheduled as soon as practicable. It is important to note that the parties are committed to meet until they reach a successful conclusion. We will continue to keep you apprised as negotiations continue.

Sept. 29, 2010

Today the Main Negotiating Committees met at the Business Office of IBEW Local 1049 to continue discussions on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The company’s Chief Negotiator Robert Greenbaum opened with a review of their proposals and spent a considerable amount of time discussing their proposals.

Chief Negotiator Shand requested clarification on many of the proposals and submitted several counter proposals. Chief Negotiator Shand stated that the parties need to completely understand the intent and application of these proposals as the parties sitting here today may not be the same in future years. The language needs to be as clear as possible from the beginning, so we do not leave it up to interpretation by others in the future.

Chief Negotiator Greenbaum asked for clarification on the union’s proposals and submitted several counter proposals as well. Chief Negotiator Shand explained that the union is sensitive to the company’s desire to be flexible in today’s utility business, however, we still need to balance those needs with the job security of our members.

Today was a productive bargaining session, and several proposals were concluded. Some of the remaining issues such as medical, seniority preference and economics will be discussed at the next session. Overall, the union and the company continue to bargain to reach a settlement that will recognize the outstanding job IBEW 1049 members do day in and out.

In addition, the sub-negotiation committees of CMS, Customer Relations, EDO, Generation and Shift are nearing completion and will be ready to submit their final products to the Main Committee. The members of these committees have worked tirelessly to work through some very difficult and complicated departmental issues. We would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all of the committee members throughout this process. A full listing of the committee members is available on our website, www.ibew1049.org.

Another meeting of the Main Committee is scheduled for Tuesday, October 5, 2010. We will continue to keep you updated as we proceed. Please post and discuss.

Sept. 22, 2010
Today the main negotiating committees of both the company and the union met to discuss another round of bargaining proposals that are important to our members.Talks were productive and addressed issues ranging from working conditions to social and economic issues.

Both the company and the union had an opportunity to review proposals from each side. Revisions and counter proposals were made and discussed. We believe much progress was made and both sides remain focused on reaching an agreement in the near term. Additionally it is possible to reach the point where economic discussions will take place after a few more sessions. Almost all of the sub-committee work is completed, most notably the Generation and CMS committees. EDO should be finished shortly.

The main negotiations committee and Chief Negotiator Shand remain committed to delivering a fair contract for our members.

Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010
Today the Main Negotiating Committee, along with the Business Staff, met at the offices of IBEW Local 1049 with the National Grid Main Committee and formerly opened discussions for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Our current Collective Bargaining will expire on February 14, 2011. Our Main Negotiating Committee was led by Business Manager Robert Shand, accompanied by Assistant Business Manager Donald Daley, President Edward Conklin, Vice President Robert Delaney, Treasurer Thomas Devlin, Recording Secretary Thomas Dowling and Executive Board Chairman Thomas Russo. Additional 1049 representatives included Business Representatives Robert Podlaski, Robin Rodriguez, Michael Whalen and Director Ellen Redmond.

Representing National Grid’s Main Negotiating Committee were; Robert Greenbaum, Chief Negotiator and Director, Labor Relations; Bill Akley, Senior Vice President, Operations and Construction, US Gas Distribution; John Bruckner, Senior Vice President, Long Island T &D; Rich Hohlman, Vice President, Electric Generation; Martin Cook, Vice President, US Property, and Sue Mais, Vice President, Customer Care.

Chief Negotiator Robert Shand opened by stating that he welcomed the opportunity to open discussions early, with no demands on the parties to settle the contract while the clock is ticking. He believed this atmosphere will produce an open dialogue for both parties. He explained that our goal would be to conclude negotiations quickly and successfully. Business Manager Shand explained that Local 1049 has always tried to partner with the previous owners, as long as our success was tied with theirs. He concluded by stating that it is important to our negotiating committee to bring back a contract to our Members that provides longtime stability and security and addresses our economic needs during these difficult times.

Chief Negotiator Robert Greenbaum, Director of Labor Relations, opened his remarks by describing the many changes and challenges the company is facing today. The company recently concluded a very complicated sale of their home services subsidiary, and is currently involved in several difficult rate cases at the PSC. The company is also working on some very technical RFP’s to respond to the expiring LIPA Management Services Agreement (MSA) and the Power Supply Agreement (PSA). Director Greenbaum explained that with all of these changes, coupled with a sluggish economy, present ongoing challenges for the company. He acknowledged the collaborative work that has taken place so far, in committee, and finished by stating that the company would work diligently to negotiate a fair and equitable agreement with Local 1049 that will meet the needs of the membership and enhance the flexibility and goals of the company.

The parties exchanged and discussed the intent of their proposals. The next meeting for the Main Committee is scheduled for Thursday, September 16, 2010. A meeting of the Health & Welfare Negotiating Committees is scheduled for tomorrow, September 10, 2010. As always, thank you for your continued support and we will keep you informed as negotiations proceed.
